Sustainable Living on Show at Chelsea 2007

SCENIC BLUE CREATES THE “MARSHALLS SUSTAINABILITY” GARDEN AT CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW 2007

Hot on the heels of its Gold Medal win at the 2006 event, Scenic Blue has been selected to exhibit at the Chelsea Flower Show 2007 with a large show garden sponsored by Marshalls Plc. The 2007 entry is designed to appeal to the UK’s “conscience consumer”* - consumers who increasingly put sustainability, climate change and ethical and social values at the forefront of their purchasing decisions - and will validate the belief that it is there is no need to sacrifice style in the pursuit of an environmentally aware domestic garden.

The show garden , which is the brainchild of the award winning Scenic Blue Design Team incorporates a number of key “sustainable living” solutions which include the recycling of “grey” water from the house through reed bed filters for irrigation purposes; the production of power via solar panelled sculptures; the planting of fruit, vegetables and flowers as a food source and wildlife habitat and the ingenious use of recycled materials throughout the garden to evolve a range of highly inspirational, innovative features.

Visually enticing, the garden depicts a scene of the ultimate in organized style and in keeping with current design trends, clearly
defines the space via a series of orderly, neatly paved pathways. A studio building housed beneath an earth, rubble mound providing a super chic “shed come greenhouse come conservatory”, along with the unusually shaped irrigation pool, combine to create two strong focal points for this ultra modern outdoor room. The boundary walls to the garden are constructed from recycled scaffolding boards and the recycling theme is continued by the inclusion of gabbions filled with stone rubble to create the retaining walls for the mound and studio building. A neatly screened composting area featuring attractive bins for both plant and domestic bio-degradable waste provides a further subtle reminder of the garden’s commitment to sound environmental practice. The dramatic lighting for the garden is powered by the striking solar sculpture structures (which also offer a useful energy resource for other applications), providing the perfect finishing touch to this ultra sophisticated contemporary domestic landscape.
