RELEASE issued on behalf of Scenic Blue
SCENIC BLUE SCCOPS SILVER AT THE RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW 2007
Proving that the quest for sustainable living need not represent the sacrifice of designer style, Scenic Blue has struck silver for the design and build of the striking and highly topical “Marshalls’ Sustainability Garden” show garden. The garden shows that there is no need to lose out in the style stakes in the pursuit of an environmentally and ethically aware domestic garden.
Scenic Blue, a Marshalls specialist business, designed the major show garden to appeal to the emerging “conscience consumer”, consumers who place increasing importance on issues relating to climate change, ethical and social values and the economic impact of globalisation. As such, the garden’s striking aesthetic appeal has been combined with a number of key strategies to encourage a sustainable lifestyle, including the recycling of grey water, the production of solar power, the planting of fruit, vegetables and flowers, and the use of recycled and ethically sourced materials.
Commenting on the medal, Judy Behl, Scenic Blue managing director, said: “the RHS Chelsea Flower Show represents the world’s showcase for excellence in garden design, so we’re thrilled to add another RHS Silver medal to our collection of design accolades (which includes an RHS Gold medal at last year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show). This award demonstrates the growing strength of the Scenic Blue brand and its ability to consistently interpret current consumer trends to create dramatic outdoor rooms, which combine design prowess with practical functionality to suit modern day lifestyles” The award winning garden Epitomising organised style, the space is clearly defined by a series of orderly paved pathways. A studio building housed beneath an earth, rubble mound provides a multi use space. This, along with the unusually shaped irrigation pool, combines to create two strong focal points for this ultra modern outdoor room. The garden’s boundary walls are constructed from recycled scaffolding boards. The recycling theme is continued with the inclusion of stone rubble-filled gabions (metal mesh crates) to create retaining walls for the mound and studio building and the use of recycled glass has been used to make cubes to form the walls around the pool area. A screened composting area provides a further reminder of the garden’s commitment to sound environmental practices.
All of the Marshalls ’ Indian Sandstone used in the garden is Marshalls ’ ethically sourced Haworth Moor, produced in accordance with the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) 9 point base code, and independently audited to approve compliance. Marshalls is sadly the only company in the hard landscaping industry to belong to the ETI.
